Four MBEs

It was an unprecedented move from Buckingham Palace. To award four pop stars from Liverpool the Member of the Order of the British Empire was something that not everybody was happy about. There were those who felt that the honour should only be bestowed upon those who had performed some act of bravery or gallantry. Lennon countered this by saying: “Lots of people who complained about us receiving the MBE received theirs for heroism in the war – for killing people. We received ours for entertaining other people. I’d say we deserve ours more.” When The Beatles received their MBEs on 26th October 1965, they still divided public opinion, though perhaps most were delighted that these four men whom the world had taken to its heart should receive the formal recognition that they deserved.

The prime minister at the time was Harold Wilson. It was he who had nominated The Beatles for their awards in an attempt to appear more in touch with young people; he was also incidentally the member of parliament for Huyton Merseyside, so he had a vested interest in raising the profile (if that were possible in this instance) of this most famous export from Liverpool.

It also seemed that John finally received the approbation from his aunt Mimi that he’d so long sought for (as she’d previously been dismissive of John’s success in music) when she surprised John by asking him if she could have his award in her house. It sat on her television set for many years – in fact until John decided to return it to the palace in protest at Britain’s involvement in the Vietnam War.
